After a few days of not being able to have any wine while recovering from surgery, I was excited to get back in the game. Tonight, we had a 2021 La Gerla Campnovo Rosso Di Montalcino, which our friend Mark from Chateau Cellars recommended to us. We were looking for an entry-level italian wine to taste. This wine was not a typical Sangiovese grape, it was actually a clone called Prugnolo Gentile. This grape is similar to Sangiovese but has more tannins.
2021 La Gerla Campnovo Rosso Di Montalcino
My tasting notes :On the nose: Licorice, Black Fruit, Vegetal
On the palate: Black fruit, red fruit, chocolate, fall leaves, earthy, leather
The first pour was fruit foward but not quite cohesive. After patiently waiting for my second pour and decanting nearly 2 hours, the wine became deep, rich, and more balanced. This Rosso had a smooth, long earthy finish.
I rated this wine a 4.1 or an 91 /100. Besides being a luscious wine, it is a great value priced under $30.
